How much is road tax on a BMW 5 Series?
Most used BMW 5 Series in stock pay the flat standard rate of £200 a year — 50% were first registered on or after 1 April 2017, when road tax became a single annual rate regardless of CO₂. Figures are for the 2026/27 UK tax year.
The BMW 5 Series, available from 2015 to 2022, is a popular choice for used car buyers. When budgeting for a pre-owned 5 Series, understanding Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), commonly known as road tax, is crucial. In the UK, VED for used cars is determined by the car's first-registration date, its CO2 emissions, and its fuel type. This means that two identical models could have different tax rates if they were first registered on different dates. For BMW 5 Series models registered before April 2017, VED is calculated based purely on their CO2 emissions banding. Lower CO2 output typically results in lower annual road tax. However, for 5 Series cars first registered from April 2017 onwards, the system changes significantly. These vehicles incur a first-year VED rate, followed by a standard flat rate for subsequent years. Additionally, cars with an original list price exceeding £40,000 are subject to a 'premium' surcharge for five years from the second time the vehicle is taxed. It is important to note that the VED exemption for fully-electric vehicles is also changing in the near future. While we currently have 6 BMW 5 Series models available for sale, the precise VED amount for any specific vehicle can vary greatly based on its exact first-registration date and specification. Therefore, always check the individual car's details on its listing to confirm the applicable annual road tax.
