Look up any car's published Thatcham/ABI Group Rating from 1 to 50 — by number plate, or by make, model and trim. A factual, vehicle-related data point only: no quote, no insurer, no PII.
By number plate, or by make and model.
A plate lookup gives a model-wide range (we never guess the exact trim from a reg alone) — use the make & model tab for a single-trim figure.
Runs the moment you check a plate or a make/model above.
Enter a number plate, or pick a make and model above, to see the published group rating.
This shows the vehicle's published Thatcham/ABI Group Rating (1–50) and, where available, the typical annual premium for that group band. The premium figure is a cited market average published by MoneySuperMarket — the median of comprehensive policies actually sold — not Motoring.Today's own figure. Neither is an insurance quote, a personalised premium estimate or a recommendation: your actual premium depends on your age, address, driving history, mileage and cover level. This tool provides vehicle and market-context information only. Motoring.Today does not advise on, arrange or introduce users to insurance.
Every car sold in the UK is placed into an insurance group from 1 to 50 by Thatcham Research on behalf of the Association of British Insurers (ABI). The rating reflects factors about the vehicle itself — repair cost and time, parts prices, new-car value, performance, security and safety equipment. Group 1 is the cheapest group to repair, replace and insure; Group 50 covers the highest-performance, costliest-to-repair cars.
It is one vehicle-related risk indicator among the many factors — driver age and history, location, annual mileage, where the car is kept, cover level and excess — that determine an actual insurance premium. This page shows only the published rating (and, where we don't hold an exact trim, a model-wide range) plus a neutral, statistical risk band derived from the rating alone. It is never a quote, premium estimate or recommendation, and we don't collect any personal details to show it.
General published averages across the whole market — not tied to any one car or driver.
Two published averages, measured differently — figures based on policies sold (ABI) tend to run lower than quote-based figures (Confused.com).
Illustrative averages by driver age — Confused.com Price Index, May 2026.
These are generic UK market averages, for context only. They're deliberately kept separate from the vehicle result above — we don't combine a car's group band with your age to estimate a personal figure, as that would imply a personalised quote this tool doesn't provide.
