How much is road tax on a MINI Countryman?
Most used MINI Countryman in stock pay the flat standard rate of £200 a year — 100% were first registered on or after 1 April 2017, when road tax became a single annual rate regardless of CO₂. Electric Countrymans now pay road tax too (the zero-emission exemption ended on 1 April 2025) — the same £200 standard rate. Figures are for the 2026/27 UK tax year.
Eight MINI Countryman models are currently available, spanning model years from 2017 to 2022. When purchasing one of these used cars, understanding how Vehicle Excise Duty (VED), or road tax, operates in the UK is essential. Unlike new cars, the VED rate for a used car is determined by its first-registration date, not the date you buy it. This means that a Countryman first registered before or after April 2017 will fall under different tax rules. The specific VED amount also depends on the car's fuel type and CO2 emissions. For cars first registered before 1 April 2017, the VED rate is based purely on the car's CO2 emissions band. However, for MINI Countryman models first registered from 1 April 2017 onwards, a different system applies. These cars initially pay a first-year rate based on CO2 emissions, followed by a flat standard rate in subsequent years. Additionally, cars with a list price exceeding £40,000 when new are subject to an annual 'premium' surcharge for five years, from the second time the car is taxed. The government's exemption for fully electric cars is also changing, which may affect future VED costs for electric Countryman variants. Because VED rates are highly specific to each individual car's first registration date, fuel type, CO2 emissions, and original list price, we cannot state a general figure here. To get the precise VED amount for any MINI Countryman you are interested in, you should always check the specific car's details on the government's VED checker or within the vehicle's documentation.
