Is a used electric car worth buying?

For drivers who can charge at home, yes. Used EVs have depreciated faster than comparable petrol cars, so the purchase price is low relative to the car you get, and running costs are far lower: no oil services, no cambelt, no clutch, and pennies per mile on an overnight tariff. The check that matters is battery state of health rather than mileage.

Buying a used EV

The four things worth knowing before you commit.

How long do electric car batteries last?

Longer than most buyers expect. Real-world fleet data shows typical degradation of a few percent over the first years and then a slow plateau, so a well-kept EV usually retains the large majority of its original capacity at eight to ten years old. Most manufacturers also warrant the battery for eight years or 100,000 miles to a stated minimum capacity, and that warranty transfers to you as the next owner.

Do used electric cars pay road tax?

Yes. Electric cars lost their Vehicle Excise Duty exemption on 1 April 2025 and now pay the standard annual rate like any other car. Cars with an original list price above £40,000 may also attract the expensive-car supplement for several years.

What should I check when buying a used electric car?

Battery state of health first. Ask for a diagnostic readout or a recent rapid-charge session showing peak charging speed. Then confirm how much of the eight-year battery warranty remains, which cables are included, whether the car supports rapid DC charging and at what rate, and the real-world range the current owner sees in winter rather than the official figure.
