How lenders actually read adverse credit
Age and status matter more than the existence of the mark.
Underwriters do not scan for a clean file. Very few applicants have one. They look at three things: how recent the problem is, whether it has been resolved, and whether your behaviour since then shows the situation has changed. A satisfied CCJ from four years ago with clean conduct since is a very different application from an unsatisfied one from last quarter.
| Mark | Stays on file | How lenders view it |
|---|---|---|
| Missed payment | 6 years | Minor on its own. One or two isolated late payments rarely stop approval. |
| Default | 6 years from the default date | Significant, but settled defaults over 2 years old are widely accepted by specialists. |
| CCJ | 6 years from judgment | Satisfied CCJs are viewed far more favourably than unsatisfied ones. Get the certificate. |
| IVA | 6 years from approval | Usually needs the insolvency practitioner's written consent while active. |
| Bankruptcy | 6 years from the order | Post-discharge applications are possible with specialist lenders and a deposit. |
Satisfying a CCJ is the single biggest lever
An unsatisfied CCJ tells a lender the debt is still outstanding. A satisfied one tells them it was dealt with. Paying it and obtaining the certificate of satisfaction from the court moves many applications from decline to approval, and often into a lower rate band on the same panel.
If you paid it within a month of judgment you can apply to have it removed from the register entirely. Otherwise it is marked satisfied and drops off six years from the judgment date. Check the Register of Judgments before you apply so nothing on the application surprises the underwriter.
What genuinely improves your chances
- A deposit. Even 10% cuts the lender's exposure and is the fastest way to a better rate with adverse credit.
- A cheaper car. Approval is about the amount of credit, not the car. Dropping the borrowing by a few thousand often flips a decision.
- Electoral roll registration. Trivial to fix and a common cause of a failed identity check.
- Clean recent conduct. Six months of no missed payments on anything is a stronger signal than the score itself.
- Stable address and employment history. Underwriters weigh stability heavily when the file has adverse marks.
What does not help: applying repeatedly. Each full application records a hard search, and a cluster of them reads as distress. Use a soft search first.
What adverse credit costs you
Be realistic about rate. Prime borrowers see APRs in the high single digits; with a CCJ or recent defaults you should expect something in the high teens to high twenties depending on the mark, the deposit and the age of the car. The example below is illustrative of that band rather than of a prime deal.

Our eligibility check is a soft search. It is visible only to you, other lenders never see it, and a decline at this stage leaves nothing on your credit file.
