What credit score is needed for car finance?

There is no universal minimum. Each lender sets its own threshold, each credit reference agency uses a different scale, and affordability often decides the application before the score does. What follows is what the numbers actually mean and what else is being assessed.

Why there is no single pass mark

The score you see is not the score the lender sees. Experian, Equifax and TransUnion each run their own scale, lenders run their own internal scorecards on top of the raw credit data, and those scorecards are tuned to the lender's own risk appetite. A score that is declined by a high-street bank is routinely approved by a specialist motor lender.

Treat your score as a rough temperature reading of your file, not as a threshold you either clear or fail.

The three UK score scales

Same file, three different numbers, all of them normal.

AgencyScaleFairGood
Experian0-999721-880881-960
Equifax0-1,000439-530531-670
TransUnion0-710566-603604-627

Broadly: a “good” score opens the mainstream panel at competitive rates, “fair” still gets approved widely but at a higher APR, and below that you are in specialist-lender territory where a deposit and a sensible borrowing amount do most of the work.

What lenders check besides the score

  • Affordability. Income against existing commitments. This declines more applications than the score does.
  • Recent conduct. Six clean months carries more weight than an old problem.
  • Address and employment stability. Frequent recent changes make underwriters cautious.
  • Electoral roll registration. A cheap fix and a common cause of failed identity checks.
  • The amount borrowed. Approval is a judgement on the loan, not just on you. A cheaper car often flips a decision.

How to improve your score before applying

Some of these work within weeks, others take months, but none of them require paying a credit-repair company.

  • Register on the electoral roll at your current address.
  • Check all three files for errors and dispute anything wrong.
  • Bring credit-card balances below about 30% of the limit.
  • Never miss a payment: set direct debits for the minimum on everything.
  • Avoid new applications in the three months before applying for finance.
  • Close dormant accounts you will not use, but keep long-standing ones open.
