No deposit car finance

You can finance a car with nothing down. Most UK lenders offer it, and on hire purchase it is common. What no deposit does not do is make the car cheaper. You are borrowing more, so you pay more interest, and the worked example below shows exactly how much.

What no deposit actually means

A deposit reduces the amount of credit. Remove it and the lender advances the full cash price, so both the monthly payment and the total interest rise. Nothing else about the agreement changes. It is the same product, on the same term, with a larger balance.

Lenders also read a deposit as a signal. Putting money down lowers their exposure, which is why deposit-free deals are easier to get with a strong credit file and harder with an impaired one.

What no deposit costs you: worked example

£12,000 car, 48-month hire purchase at 12.9% APR.

 No deposit10% deposit
Deposit£0£1,200
Amount of credit£12,000£10,800
Monthly payment£317.15£285.44
Total charge for credit£3,223.20£2,901.12
Total amount payable£15,223.20£14,901.12

The deposit does not vanish. It comes off the price of the car, so the meaningful comparison is the total charge for credit: that difference is the genuine extra cost of keeping your money in your pocket at the start.

When no deposit is the right call

It genuinely makes sense when:

  • You need the car now and the cash is committed elsewhere.
  • You have an emergency fund you would rather not drain.
  • You are part-exchanging and the equity in your current car acts as the deposit.
  • The rate is low enough that keeping liquidity is worth the extra interest.

It is usually the wrong call when the deposit exists and is otherwise idle. The interest saved is a guaranteed return you will not beat in a savings account at typical car-finance rates.

How to qualify with nothing down

  • A clean recent payment record matters more than the score itself.
  • Keep the borrowing modest. Approval is a judgement on the amount, not just on you.
  • Part-exchange equity counts as a deposit and often unlocks a better rate band.
  • A longer term lowers the monthly figure but raises total interest, so check both.
  • Use a soft search first so a decline never touches your credit file.
